Are you more of an "I'll dive right in and figure it out" person, or a "Show Me How This Thing Works" person?  If the former, go right ahead and try the excerpts browers on the right side of this page and/or scroll through the excerpts that start below the following information -- although we still suggest reading the information first.  If you are the latter, click here for a video demonstrating the Excerpts Browser. Either way (or both), enjoy!

This page is recommended for searches limited to specific Torah books, weekly portions (parshiot), chapters, verses, and/or sources (authors). For keyword and/or for exact phrase (including verse and source) searches of the entire excerpts database, we recommend using the Search Engine page.  For broadest results, use both pages and alternative search strategies.

This page displays the full text of all or "sorted" (filtered) excerpts in the database.  Use the "Torah Verses" and/or "Excerpt Sources" browsers at the right to locate the excerpts associated with your desired Torah book, portion, chapter. verse, or author.  Or, simply scroll through the excerpts, using the "boxes" at the bottom of any page displaying excerpts to "jump" ahead or back.

Also note that immediately below the chapter, verse, and keyword of each excerpt is a highlighted line comprised of multiple links.  Clicking on any of the links will limit (filter) the excerpts display to the selected category.

Transcription of excerpts is incomplete.  For current status, please see "Transcribed Sources" on the Search Engine page.  To assist with completion, please see "Contributors" page.

GENESIS — 2:19 name

GEN314 One of the aspects of wisdom that God bestowed upon the first man was that he had the ability to call each beast and bird by the name that best described each species.  Midrash, Yalkut Shimoni, 1 Kings 247.  This trait was part of man’s resemblance to God, showing he understood the nature of each animal so well that he could choose the names perfectly suited to each species, with the name actually describing the essence of each animal.  Rabbeinu Bechaye commentary. Thus, in Hebrew, an object’s name should and often does reflect the essence of that object, animal, or even person.  … Judaism believes that the name of a person is so crucial that it can change and sometimes help determine a person’s personality and future. In fact, the Talmud states that a person’s name impacts upon his future life.  Berachot 7b  Parents should be very careful in choosing a specific name to match the essence of the baby because the name could determine if the child will grow up to be moral or immoral. Midrash Tanchuma, Ha’azinu 7 AMJV 185

GENESIS — 2:22 brought

GEN318 It is a mitzvah to bring joy to a chasan (groom) and kallah (bride) at their wedding. Talmud, Berachos 6b; Kesubos 17aWhen Hashem created Adam and Chavah in the Garden of Eden, He brought Chavah to Adam with joy, so that they should rejoice with each other. [this verse, Berachot 61a] This is an obligatory mitzvah of kindness. One may interrupt one’s Torah study in order to bring rejoicing to a couple. Kesubot 17a. When a wedding procession passed, Rabbi Yehudah would interrupt his Torah studies and go with his students to dance for the bride and bring the couple joy.  JOURNEY 533

GENESIS — 2:22 rib

GEN320 God endowed woman with more intuition and tact than man. Niddah 45b Biblical support for this statement was found in the word Vayiven [ וינן which is made from a denominative from  בינה “intelligence”; this verse], used when woman was created from the rib of man. God used special intelligence (binah) before coming to the decision that the best material from which to shape woman was the rib, the symbol of modesty, for it is that part of the body which was always covered. Genesis Rabbah 18:2.  LEHRMAN 238

GENESIS — 2:22 rib

GEN321 The Torah is replete with acts of chesed (loving kindness).  Every person [should be able to] judge for himself how important God considers this matter.   Our Sages have commented that “built up the rib” teaches that God braided Eve’s hair for in the seacoast towns, braiding hair is called “building.”  Berachot 61a  SONCINO CLASSICS
